History is in the making as midterm elections come to a close on a election night. Historic races down in Georgia and Florida still hang in the balance. Meanwhile, history has already been made in the state of Colorado. Colorado has elected Jared Polis as governor, which makes him the first openly gay man to be elected to the position. In other parts of the country, history is being made as well. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has defeated opponent, Anthony Pappas, in New York’s 14th congressional race.
By defeating Pappas, Ocasio-Cortez will become the youngest woman elected to congress at just 29 years of age. Ocasio-Cortez first made waves when she pulled a major upset by defeating ten term representative, Joe Crawley, during the democratic primary. Her victory was a relatively a landslide with an approximate 65% advantage over Republican Anthony Pappas.
Ocasio-Cortez is a native of the Bronx who graduated from Boston University in 2011. After college, Ocasio-Cortez made her living as a waitress and bartender before beginning her political career. She gained her start in politics as a community organizer for Bernie Sanders during the 2016 election. Since then, she has made her way across the country by visiting major places of conflict such as Flint, Michigan and Standing Rock.
Ocasio-Cortez will take her place in Congress on January 3rd 2019.
