If two players have identical stats and similar measurables, who do you choose? The young, flashy guy with big game potential or the consistent, sure-fire pocket guy that will never let you down? The 49ers have had to make this decision. Twice. In 1992 they ditched Joe Montana (likely the greatest quarterback of all time) for BYU prodigy Steve Young. Then, in 2012 they ditched Alex Smith after making a Superbowl run with the Nevada phenom Kaepernick. So who would you take, football fans? Alex Smith or Colin Kaepernick? Here’s some numbers to help you out.
Since the start of the 2012 season Smith’s record is 19-8-1. Kaepernick’s? 19-8. Smith has 43 TDs and 15 interceptions, while Kaepernick has 37 TDs to 15 interceptions. So why did San Francisco release Smith if Kaepernick is the same guy? One answer: Potential.
ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski said, I quote:
“I truly believe Colin Kaepernick could be one of the greatest quarterbacks ever. I love his skill set. I think the sky’s the limit.”
We share his sentiments.
