On Saturday afternoon, actor Alec Baldwin broke his silence regarding a shooting that took place on the set of Rust. Baldwin told paparazzi that he couldn’t comment on the particular details of the case because of the ongoing legal matters regarding the shooting, but he did offer brief remarks.
“I’ve been ordered by the sheriff’s department in Santa Fe. I can’t answer any questions about the investigation. I can’t,” he said, according to a video posted on TMZ.
“It’s an active investigation. A woman died. She was my friend.”
As he spoke, Baldwin recalled the time he had dinner with Halyna Hutchins and director Joel Souza during production of the film. Baldwin characterized the Rust team as “a very, very well-oiled crew.”
“The day we arrived in Santa Fe to start shooting I took her to dinner with Joel, the director,” Baldwin said.
“We were a very, very well-oiled crew doing a film together and then this horrible event happened.”
Hutchins, Souza and Baldwin were working on a film called Rust in New Mexico earlier this month when Baldwin discharged a prop gun. Both Souza and Hutchins were wounded in the process. Souza was rushed to an ambulance, treated and is currently at home recovering. However, Hutchins was transported to the University of New Mexico hospital where she was pronounced dead.
“The guy is overwhelmed with grief,” Baldwin said about Hutchins’ husband, Matt.
“There are incidental accidents on film sets, from time to time, but nothing like this. This is a one in a trillion episode. So, he is in shock. He has a 9-year-old son. We are in constant contact with him. We are very worried about his family and his kid. We’re eagerly awaiting for the sheriff’s department to tell us what the investigation has yielded.”
As for the ongoing investigation of the shooting, the actor said he “talks to the cops every day.”
“I’m cooperating with them,” Baldwin said.
