When the entire Atlanta Hawks franchise went up for sale last week, there was a mad dash of groups announcing that they were interested in owning the team.
The Atlanta Hawks don’t seem phased at all though, continuing to prove that they are the best team in the NBA and they also have a very efficient way of doing so. Even though they might have some different ways of getting fans into the stadium, the Atlanta Hawks stay atop of the NBA’s standings.
Now, a legendary member of the Atlanta community, a baseball legend and the former MLB homerun king, Hank Aaron, might be joining some big names and big money people in the talks of ownership of the Hawks.
The Following from Marc Stein of ESPN.com
Former baseball home run king and Atlanta icon Hank Aaron has joined a group of current owners from the NBA, Major League Soccer and Italian soccer’s storied Serie A that is seeking to purchase the Atlanta Hawks, according to league sources.
Sources told ESPN.com that the group is spearheaded by Memphis Grizzlies minority owner and vice chairman Steve Kaplan, Indonesian billionaire sports and media magnates Erick Thohir and Handy Poernomo Soetedjo and former Grizzlies CEO Jason Levien, who is the current managing general partner of DC United in MLS.
The deep-pocketed consortium, sources say, also includes a select and diverse group of prominent investors, including Aaron and other Atlantans.
The biggest thing is to keep this franchise in Atlanta. Atlanta seems to be the hotbed for the NBA as of late as the Hawks are sourced down there, Turner Sports (A big partner with the NBA) and Bleacher Report are also out of Atlanta. It seems to be a big area for the NBA.
