There are currently 30 teams in the NBA and roughly 450 players currently playing in the association, leaving plenty of different cities and fan bases involved. Over recent years and in previous junctures throughout NBA history, league expansion has been one of the hottest topics and it has emerged in discussions again.
Adam Silver has been extremely proactive during his tenure as NBA commissioner and in a recent interview with Trail Blazers guard C.J. McCollum for The Players Tribune, he touched on the probability of expansion, specifically a professional team in Seattle.
Silver states that expansion is always a possibility and Seattle would be on a ‘short list of cities’ when considering which areas deserve their own franchise. Video courtesy of The Players Tribune on YouTube:
Seattle has been a city deserving of a franchise and hopefully, they will have one in store in the near future. They were last home to the Seattle Supersonics up until 2008 when the franchise moved to Oklahoma City and became the Thunder, leaving fans largely disappointed.
While Oklahoma City has proven more than worthy of having their own team, it’s safe to say Seattle deserves one too, especially with all the great years the old Sonics teams had with big names such as Shawn Kemp, Rashard Lewis, Gary Payton, and Ray Allen.
While expansion could still be a few offseasons down the road, look for Seattle to be one of the first cities brought up by Adam Silver and company when discussing where the NBA could add another franchise or two.
