With the Grammy Awards nearing, the Academy is closing out its nomination process for the Oscars. As the announcement of this year’s nominees nears, news has broken about on category in particular. Deadline has reported that the Academy has cut the number of documentaries in contention for this year’s show from 166 to 15. Among those still in contention are Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, RBG, Three Identical Strangers and Free Solo. While many documentaries appeared to be sure fire nominees, other films missed the cut for this year’s award show.
Of those not to make the short list, Amazing Grace and Quincy have caught the most attention for documentaries not to make the short list. Released on Netflix, Quincy chronicled the storied career of iconic producer, Quincy Jones. The Netflix documentary has already picked up a nomination for this year’s Grammy Awards. In addition to Quincy, Amazing Grace made headlines when it didn’t make the cut. The Spike Lee supported documentary chronicled the making of the late singer’s 1972 gospel album.
The films that did make the most recent cut will move forward to the January 22nd chopping block. From there, the final list of nominees will be announced in time for this year’s Oscars.
