ABC made headlines earlier this year when it was announced that the 2020 Academy Awards would air on February 9th. By doing so, the network would air the award show the earliest it had in history. As a result, some began to speculate if holding the Academy Awards in early February would become a trend. However, we now know that it will not be a trend. In fact, the latest ABC announcement indicates the opposite.
ABC has confirmed the television air dates for the 2021 and 2022 Academy Awards. Despite speculation that future shows would be moved up to mirror the 2020 air date, ABC has confirmed that the 2021 Academy Awards will air on February 28th. During the following year, the Academy Awards will air on February 27th.
Per usual, the Academy Awards has not named a host this early in the process. Coming off of last year’s host-less award show, the Academy has hinted that next year’s show may use the same formula. When asked about 2019 host-less award show format, ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke said, “I believe we will not mess with that format to the best of our ability.”
Last year’s broadcast saw a slight increase in ratings. We’ll see if the 2020 award show can match the same level of excitement.
