Aaron Gordon might be the most respected runner-up in NBA dunk contest history.
After putting on a show with Minnesota Timberwolves guard Zach LaVine in what’s argued to be the best dunk contest ever in the 2016 dunk contest, Gordon solidified himself as one of the league’s top aerial craftsmen.
If he so chooses, Gordon’s earned himself a guaranteed spot in the 2017 dunk contest. In an interview with Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders, Gordon says he’s not completely sure that he’ll give it another go:
“I’m not 100 percent sure. I kind of gave a lot in this last one and to be more creative would be difficult. I think I could do it, but I’m not sure if I’m going to.”
I’m sure the league and fans will encourage a rematch between LaVine and Gordon at All-Star Weekend in New Orleans in February. I think that would be considered the best case scenario.
From Gordon’s point of view, not having to participate means he would be able to enjoy the contest a bit more. He wouldn’t have to endure the stressors of having to come up with dunks and practice them. Gordon’s absence could also make room for some other leaper to make a name for themselves and challenge LaVine.
Whether or not he competes in 2017, Gordon is in dunk contest history books as possibly the most deserving runner-up. However, if he does decide to return and declare a rematch, it will take the anticipation for the 2017 contest to a completely new level.
