New details about the highly anticipated Aaliyah biopic have been revealed.
According to New York Post, the upcoming Lifetime network biopic and the late R&B star Aaliyah will include information about her relationship with R. Kelly.
The two singers were rumored to be married in 1994, when Aaliyah was just 15 and Kelly was 27.
Aaliyah denied the rumors, although a marriage certificate later appeared, with her age falsely listed as 18. [Her parents later annulled the marriage.]
Executive producer Debra Martin Chase said this:
“Aaliyah’s personal and professional relationship with R. Kelly will be explored with care in the film as we set out to depict her life with the utmost respect.
Above all else, it’s our hope to inspire an entierely new generation with her music and larger-than-life talent.”
The film, Aaliyah: Princess of R&B, is based on the bestselling biography Aaliyah: More Than a Woman, written by former Time music editor Christopher John Farley.
The biopic will trace the singer’s life from age 10 until her untimely death, and will begin shooting this summer.
It was recently announced that 17 year old-Disney star Zendaya Coleman will star in the title role and re-record four of Aaliyah’s songs for the film.
