The Philadelphia 76’ers. Back in the day, one of the greats. When you heard the three letters ‘NBA’, teams like Boston and Philadelphia came to mind. They housed the careers of legends. Dolph Schayes, Wilt ‘The Stilt’ Chamberlain, ‘Dr J’ Julius Erving, Moses Malone and in recent times Allen Iverson. All legends in their own rights. Bringing glory to the Sixers history books. They’re one of the most storied franchises in sports.
But then we come to the Sixers of today. Young, Inexperienced. And unfortunately. Straight up garbage. This is because they have been in tank mode 2012 and at this rate. Probably won’t make the Playoffs next season. So that is nearly 4 years of unadulterated trash.
Why is this? How did this historic franchise get to this position? Well. After making the Playoffs in the 2011-12 season. The Sixers owner Josh Harris decided to get a new general manager. Hinkie was interviewed for said position. Skip forward to 2013 and Sam Hinkie got not just the general manager position. But also the president of basketball operations! Wowee this guy must be a genius.
We fast realized that this wasn’t the case. His first order of business was to get some TNT, and blow the team up!
Jrue Holiday, out. Seemed fine. I mean Holiday is good. But it was clear that injuries would plague him. But then he booted Evan Turner, Spencer Hawes and Thaddeus Young. It was then we all realized. Sam Hinkie has a screw loose. But he didn’t stop there!
After all the trading and obvious signs of tanking came an abundance of Draft Picks. Nerlens Noel being the most high-profile. All was actually looking decent. You could actually see a future in the Philadelphia team! But then Hinkie once again acted like this was ‘The Association’ on NBA2K! Trading away Rookie of the Year Michael Carter-Williams and KJ McDaniels! WHY?!
Sure the team was young and inexperienced. But you could actually see spurts of talent. With the right coaching and a few years of nurturing. The Philadelphia 76’ers could be a legitimate Playoff team in 3-5 years. But no. Sam Hinkie just couldn’t help himself.
You see teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks. I can see where they’re coming from. They have only been terrible for a short time. If there’s such thing as tanking properly, they’re doing it right. Hinkie on the other hand has recycled the rebuilding process over and over and (you guessed it!) over again.
This man, this mental case, is single-handedly killing a franchise. Constantly making trades that send them back to the stone age. We all know that tanking is wrong. And this man has been advocating and encouraging it for nearly four years now. That is not right. Banish this man from the NBA. He is making the 76’ers a punchline. A laughing-stock. And for what? So you can get a 5th seed in 3 years? Disgraceful. But the real question is. Why is nobody calling this guy out? Why aren’t the owners of this historic franchise, not doing anything about it? James Dolan might be a grade A nutcase but at least he had the wherewithal to hire Phil Jackson.
Get. Hinkie. OUT.
