An era in the history of the NBA is often forgotten for one reason or another. Before Brandon Roy came to town and captivated audiences for a couple years, before the Portland Trail Blazers selected Greg Oden over Kevin Durant and before Damian Lillard made ‘Rip City’ his personal proving ground, there was a group of players that stirred the pot quite possibly not like any teams before or after them and mostly for illegal reasons.
The crew known as the ‘Jail Blazers’ had a mostly negative connotation following them no matter where they went. The crew, led by Damon Stoudemire, Rasheed Wallace, Bonzi Wells, Zach Randolph, Ruben Patterson and Darius Miles and featured appearances from Scottie Pippen, Shawn Kemp, Chris Dudley, Arvydas Sabonis and Qyntel Woods.
Starting in 1999, this group went through a number of issues including off court arrests for a number of drugs, a number of suspensions for players, a stint in rehab was the main story of this squad and buried underneath it was the success these teams had, never finishing below .500 until 2005.
Now it appears that this legendary and often forgotten about squad is finally getting what they deserve. A film documenting their ups and downs.
Former Blazers guard Damon Stoudemire, while talking to the Dirt and Sprague show in Portland about taking the head coach job at Portland University, announced that there is a 30 for 30 film in the works.
From Damon Stoudamire on our show just now – The 30/30 Portland has longed wanted on the Jailblazers is currently being made.
