Tonight is truly a night of firsts. Leading the way, Chadwick Boseman has earned his first “Best Actor” nomination at the 93rd Academy Awards. Not long ago, Daniel Kaluuya won his first Academy Award for his portrayal of Black Panther Party Chairman Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah. Now, Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson have made history as the first two Black women to win “Best Makeup and Hairstyling” at the 93rd Academy Awards.
“I am overwhelmed with gratitude to be honored by such a prestigious committee. To be with Jamika and for us to be the first African Americans nominated in this category is overwhelming. I have to raise my expectations for myself because this was something I never thought that I could achieve,” Neal said during a recent interview.
The two were not the only ones to represent the film, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, on the winner’s stage. Ann Roth also won “Best Costume Design” at the 93rd Academy Awards. Later tonight, we’ll see if Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman will win for their roles in the film.
Glass ceilings breaking! And the fact that Ms. Mia Neal took HER moment and made it also about Trans women, Asian women, Native women and Latina women speaks to her inclusive spirit! Let's keep breaking that glass! https://t.co/U8hU2qNtrY
