The Philadelphia 76ers are building a 140,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility in Wilmington, Delaware, in which their G League affiliate team, the Delaware 87ers, will play. This news comes from Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer:
Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, which oversees the Sixers organization, and The Buccini/Pollin Group announced Wednesday morning their partnership to create 76ers Fieldhouse on 8.9 acres of land off U.S. Route 13 and Garasches Lane. BPG is a private real estate acquisition, development and management company based in Wilmington.
Pompey adds that the facility is scheduled to open in the last three months of 2018. The 87ers will begin using the court for their games next year; it’s expected to host approximately 2,500 fans.
Aside from its three full-size basketball courts, the complex will have two indoor soccer fields, a sports performance and athletic training area, plus retail and office space. High school, AAU and travel-team games and camps are expected to be held at the facility.
Chris Heck, Sixers president of business operations, said the following:
“The No. 1 priority was to do something that was great for the 76ers and great for the brand of the 76ers. But to extend that, to be able to make this a passion product as well for the kids in the community is really enjoyable.”
This is a very cool venture by the Sixers and should be excellent for the community of Wilmington.
