Top 5 Offensive Players To Watch At 2017 East-West Shrine Game

  • January 21, 2017

The annual East-West Shrine Game often times is overlooked for all the wrong reasons. Every year there are about 3-4 guys who really stand out at the Shrine game and go on to have productive NFL careers. This year Geronimo Allison is a perfect example of this who has been really productive in the playoffs for the Green Bay Packers. Allison was unguardable in the East-West game a year ago. Where would the Packers be without Allison’s ability to fill in for an injured Jordy Nelson? Scouting becomes crucial this time of year. Who are five names to watch during this year’s East-West Game?

  1. Gunner Kiel – QB (Cincinnati)

Kiel is a former Notre Dame product who was considered the top quarterback high school prospect in the country in 2013. The problem is he has numerous off the field issues and really hasn’t played well during his college career. Kiel threw for 804 yards in 5 games in 2016. The good news is the two seasons prior in Cincy, Kiel played pretty well. His best year came in 2014 where he threw 31 touchdowns. He’s got some zip on the ball, but as of now he probably is undraftable as he has been one of the most inconsistent quarterbacks in college football.

2. De’Veon Smith – HB (Michigan)

Smith was a productive back for the Wolverines in 2016. He rushed for 846 yards on 4.7 yards per rush. Smith is a powerful runner who has some great vision. With any running back, Smith can also catch the ball out of the backfield. Expect Smith to be a late round pick who could provide some real production for a team. Remember running backs are a dime a dozen. You can find talent late in the draft.

3. Michael Roberts – TE (Toledo)

Small-school guys get overlooked for no reason during the Draft process. Roberts graded out as the 2nd best tight end in the country according to Pro Football Focus. He also led all tight ends with 16 touchdowns. Roberts is also a complete tight end who also blocks very well. Toledo’s running back Kareem Hunt had an awesome year. Anytime you can find a tight end who is 6’5″, 270, and runs that well has to catch your eye.

4. Eric Saubert – TE (Drake)

Talk about another small school tight end that has a real opportunity Saturday. Saubert is your prototypical pass-catching tight end who has above average speed for the position. When you watch this guy he really reminds you of a poor man’s Jimmy Graham who is oozing with potential. You just never know when it comes to developmental tight ends. Saubert is so unknown that it’s hard to even find his stats on major websites but this guy should be one to watch.

5. Erik Magnuson – Tackle (Michigan)

Michigan could have 10 players drafted this year but for whatever reason, this guy continues to get overlooked. Magnuson performed admirably at right tackle all year. For a guy who is 6’5″, 310 you could even move this guy to guard making him more versatile. Every team is looking for that swing tackle that can provide depth to all of the spots on the offensive line.
