Fresh off a trip to their first Super Bowl appearance since 2012, the San Francisco 49ers have worked hard at improving their roster this offseason. The Niners have remained active throughout the draft process as well, as they’ve elected to trade one of their key running backs for a late-round draft pick. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Niners will trade RB Matt Breida to the Dolphins in exchange for a fifth-round pick.

After the deal was completed, the Niners now had possession of the 153rd overall pick. San Francisco would use the pick to draft offensive tackle Colton McKivitz out of West Virginia. McKivitz makes San Francisco’s second offensive line addition today after also acquiring All-Pro Trent Williams from the Washington Redskins.
For the Dolphins, they now add another option out of the backfield for whoever is starting at quarterback next season. The Dolphins do still roster veteran signal-caller Ryan Fitzpatrick but also spent a top-five pick on Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
In his past couple seasons with the 49ers, Matt Breida has been a solid complementary option. Though he’s far from a three-down back, Breida is one of the better pass-catching backs in the NFL and his speed makes him a dangerous threat in the open field. The Dolphins have quietly pieced together a productive offseason and have now added yet another weapon to their improving offense.
