The San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs are discussing a trade that would involve runningback / return specialist De’Anthony Thomas.

The trade is interesting most notably because Chip Kelly. Kelly, the new 49ers head coach, coached Thomas during his collegiate playing career at Oregon. Kelly had a track record of acquiring players he coached in college including a trade involving Kiko Alonso a year ago. Kelly figures to use Thomas in the “Darren Sproles” sort of role in San Fran.
For the Chiefs the deal makes sense as they already have a ton of runningback depth in Jamaal Charles, Spencer Ware, and Charcandrick West. Thomas, a fourth round pick in 2013, was the teams primary return man for KC in 2015. It remains to be seen what Thomas would be worth to Kelly and the 9ers.
