Within today’s television landscape, we have a number of news options. There are networks like CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, etc. Unfortunately, there are few news options operated by or geared toward people of color. Thankfully, one group is gearing up to solve this issue. Earlier this month, the Black News Channel revealed it would debut in November of this year.
According to The Root, “Black News Channel (BNC) will be a unique multi-platform news and information channel created for African Americans, subscription television’s most dynamic, high growth, and loyal consumers.” The network will operate on a 24-hour basis while offering new opportunities for Black news talent. In addition, the network will partner with Florida A&M University and push the network into 33 million homes worldwide.
Unfortunately, many have concerns about the direction the network may be headed in. The effort to launch the Black News Channel is being lead by former GOP congressman J.C. Watts, Jr. While an entire lineup has not been announced, it has been reported that Watts, Jr. will host his own show called My America. In addition, conservative talk show host, Larry Elder, will also host his own show. Viewers have begun raising concerns whether the network will be more partisan than they had hoped. Only time will tell. The network is set to launch in major markets like New York and Los Angeles this November.
