History has been made in the state of Maryland. The Associated Press has projected that Wes Moore will move past Republican challenger Dan Cox in the state’s gubernatorial race. By doing so, Moore will become the first Black man to serve as governor in the state of Maryland.
“This can be Maryland’s moment,” Moore told supporters in October, according to ABC 8.
“We have amazing people and incredible potential, but not everybody’s in a position to succeed.”
Moore’s victory is not only significant in the state of Maryland, but it is also notable in the national political landscape. He is only the third Black governor in the history of the United States.
“It’s a new day in Maryland, as Wes Moore stands poised to become the state’s first Black governor. It shouldn’t have taken this long for this barrier to fall, but the day has arrived, and we celebrate it. We also celebrate the onset of an administration that will embrace LGBTQ+ equality, one that will ensure that the extremist rhetoric and legislation that has been seen in other states can’t gain a foothold in Maryland,” the Human Rights Coalition stated.
“LGBTQ+ voters are among the fastest growing voting blocs in the country, and as governor, Wes Moore will make protecting our rights and freedoms a priority – as they should be.”
