Delia Ramirez has defeated Republican Justin Burau and captured Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District. With this victory, Ramirez will become the first Latina to represent Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.
“We just made history tonight,” Ramirez told supporters on Tuesday night.
“We broke a glass ceiling.”
Ramirez is one of several Democrats to win key races across the state on Tuesday. Leading the way, J.B. Pritzker handily defeated Republican challenger Darren Bailey to remain governor.
“To the people of Illinois: thank you for your trust in me once again. I choose to fight for our state, our country, our world — and the fight my mother never gave up on. And I’m thrilled to work alongside you for four more years as your Governor,” Pritzker tweeted.
“Thank you, Illinois. Time to get to work.”
Elsewhere, Tammy Duckworth ousted political newcomer Kathy Salvi to keep her seat in the U.S. Senate.
“We did it! Thank you, Illinois,” she stated.
“I promise to work to make you proud every moment of the next six years.”
Democrats will now turn their attention toward Wisconsin as a key Senate race could swing momentum in Congress.
