The 2017 NBA All-Star Game is in the bag as the West was able to take down the East by a score of 192-182. The hometown hero, Anthony Davis, took home MVP honors by posting a line of 52 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks and a ton of alley-oops.
It was a normal All-Star Game as there was no defense played, a bunch of dunks, and a lot of long threes. There were some laughs between Giannis Antetokounmpo and Steph Curry, an alley-oop between Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, and a couple of records were broken on the night.
It was obvious that both Westbrook and Davis were gunning for MVP early on in the game. Both players were trying to dunk on everyone, and Antetokounmpo looked like he was going to give them a run for their money before falling off in the second half.
Anthony Davis broke just about every scoring record for the All-Star Game. The most notable record was the scoring record, and he broke that by scoring 52 points for the game, breaking the record set by Wilt Chamberlain in 1962 with 42 points. Davis tied the record for most points in a quarter by scoring 20 points, tying him with Glen Rice (1997). He also set records for most field goals made in a game (26), most field goals made in a half (15), most field goals made in a quarter (10), most field goals attempted (39), most field goals attempted in a half (22), and most field goals attempted in a quarter (15).
Russell Westbrook came one point shy of breaking the record off of the bench. Last year he scored 40 points and in the 2017 NBA All-Star Game, he scored 41.
The 2017 NBA All-Star Game was one for the record books. Another record that was broken was total assists by a team in the first half of an All-Star Game. The West team broke the record by dishing out 34 assists for the half. The West didn’t stop there. They then broke the record for most assists in a game with a total of 60. Both teams combined to set the record for most assists in a game with 103.
On top of the assists record, both teams helped set a record for most points scored in a game with 374, most points scored in a half with 189, most points in a quarter with 101, most field goals made by both teams at 162, and most field goals made in a half at 83. The West set a couple more records on their own with most field goals made by a team (84) and most field goals made in a half (43). The East set a record of their own with the most points in a quarter with 53, tying them with last year’s West team.
Kevin Durant made his impact, becoming just the fourth player to post a triple-double in an All-Star Game by posting a line of 21 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. Marc Gasol was two assists shy, and Kyrie Irving was three rebounds short of posting their own triple-doubles.
Notable stat lines for the East include Antetokounmpo scoring 30 points, grabbing six rebounds, dished out one assist, nabbed three steals, and blocked one shot. LeBron James had 23 points and three rebounds; Kyrie Irving posted 22 points, 14 assists, seven rebounds, and three steals; John Wall had 12 points, six rebounds, four assists, and four steals; Isaiah Thomas had 20 points and three assists; and Kyle Lowry had 19 points, three assists, and two steals.
Some lines for the West include Steph Curry putting up 21 points, six assists, four rebounds, and one nap on the court. Westbrook included 7 assists and five rebounds to his 41 points; and Marc Gasol has 10 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists.
With Anthony Davis winning the 2017 NBA All-Star Game MVP, he stopped Westbrook’s two-year MVP streak, and Davis will look to continue his dominance in the All-Star Game next year in Los Angeles.
