The 2015 NBA Finals went six games and it felt like it dragged on forever. While everyone enjoyed talking about the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers, there was just too much nonsense going on. The two teams just weren’t on the same level and eventually the better team prevailed after messing around for a few games.
Now as the 2015-16 NBA season gets set to start, the NBA dropped the schedule for the 2016 NBA Finals. It’s a series that begins on June 2nd but has the opportunity to end on June 19.
That means for the first time since 1978 when the Washington Bullets beat the Seattle SuperSonics in the longest NBA Finals of all-time – seven games over 18 days – the 2016 NBA Finals could also match that mark and the NBA provided a reason why that could happen.
Following from an NBA press release.
The NBA announced the schedule for the 2016 NBA Finals:
Thursday, June 2, 2016
Sunday, June 5, 2016
Wednesday, June 8, 2016
Friday, June 10, 2016
Monday, June 13, 2016
Thursday, June 16, 2016
Sunday, June 19, 20162016 NBA Finals to feature more days between games. Schedule includes 2 days between all games in which travel is necessary
It’ll help the teams travel and get to places without having a rushed feeling and it will also help the media but it just is going to extend the Finals longer than it should go. An interesting part about the Finals is that it will feature the first Friday and Wednesday games since 2003. Every other Finals game since has been played on Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday in accordance with some usual television unwritten rules. Additionally, 2016 could have the first Finals game on a Monday since 2000.
Overall, this change will provide better basketball for both teams giving them an equal amount of rest. While it might feel like the season will be never-ending, for true fans of basketball, that won’t be a problem.
