It was Kobe Bryant’s final All-Star appearance in the 2016 NBA All-Star Game but as the Los Angeles Lakers legend went through the fanfare of receiving the love and admiration of everyone at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, there was a game to be played.

Kobe had a nice tribute from the NBA to start the contest that would culminate what possibly is the best All-Star Weekend in recent memory. Bryant went through the motions of his final All-Star Game, getting matched up with his old friend Pau Gasol, having LeBron James smack the floor and square up with him and even having Andre Drummond contest him on a wide open three-point shot. It was Kobe’s night but it was also an event that saw Paul George explode for 41 points, Russell Westbrook throw down nasty slams and drill three’s on his way to an MVP award, a full slate of spectacular dunks from the NBA’s top stars and Kawhi Leonard also smiled during the game.

Russell Westbrook led the way for the Western Conference with his 31 points on the night, Stephen Curry scored 26 points and both James Harden and Kevin Durant scored 23 points on the night with Anthony Davis chipping in 24 points of his own. Chris Paul had the Western Conference’s only double-double, scoring 14 points and handing out 16 assists. Kawhi Leonard scored 17 points during the game and Kobe Bryant dropped 10 points with seven assists during the game.
The Western Conference set a number of records in their 2016 NBA All-Star Game victory. They scored 196 points, made 82 field goals, made 31 three-pointers and attempted a remarkable 80 three-pointers. The West attempted 149 shots overall on the night. Amazing.

Westbrook won his 2nd consecutive Kia NBA All-Star MVP scoring 31, grabbing eight rebound and handing out five assists and he is the first repeat winner since Bob Pettit 1958-59.
For the East, Paul George scored 41 points which came up just one point short of tying Wilt Chamberlain’s All-Star record of 42 set at the 1962 All-Star Game. George also broke Carmelo Anthony’s record for most three-pointers made in the NBA All-Star game, making nine on the night.

Andre Drummond and Kyle Lowry had the only double-doubles on the night for the Eastern Conference. Drummond scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds while Lowry performed well in front of his hometown crowd, scoring 14 points and handing out 10 assists. John Wall poured in 22 points on the night coming off the bench for the Eastern Conference. The three stars for the Eastern Conference – LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony – struggled on the night for the East scoring a combined 34 points between them. LeBron and Carmelo scored 13 points each and Wade only scored 8 points on the night.

When all was said and done, the 2016 NBA All-Star Game might not have been the most exciting compared to years prior but the NBA’s best came out and put on a show for the first time on an international court in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Hopefully this will mean future All-Star Weekends will be held outside of the United States.
