The much anticipated 2016 Cannes International Film Festival is quickly approaching, and so it’s no surprise that the official poster (pictured above) was released on Monday morning. We don’t know much about the lineup, apart from the inclusion of Money Monster, but the poster is an exciting start.
The dreamy poster was inspired by Jean-Luc Godard’s 1963 film Contempt, labeled “the coolest movie of all time” by Slate for its “comparatively nonchalant attitude toward innovation.”
The image seen in the poster features Michel Piccoli of the film, and the stairs of the Casa Malaparte on the gorgeous Island of Capri in Italy, called “one of the most captivating and unusual structures in the world” by Architectural Digest. Deadline captured this statement from a festival representative on the poster:
“It’s all there. The steps, the sea, the horizon: a man’s ascent towards his dream, in a warm Mediterranean light that turns to gold. As an image it is reminiscent of a timeless quote used at the beginning of Contempt: ‘Cinema replaces our gaze with a world in harmony with our desires.'”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the poster’s setting evokes the Palais cinema, where the 69th festival will be taking place in only a couple of months.
The poster was designed by Herve Chigioni in collaboration with Gilles Frappier. Cannes will occur from May 11 to 22, with George Miller (Mad Max) presiding over the jury.
