The Kansas City Chiefs have endured a busy offseason which saw them acquire speedy wide out Jeremy Maclin reuniting him with his former Eagle coach Andy Reid. The Chiefs finished the 2014 season at 9-7 finishing 2nd place in the AFC West. What will the Chiefs draft agenda look like come April 30th?
The wide receiver position is still a major issue within the roster. Jeremy Maclin helps, but there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. A Kansas City wide out has not caught a touchdown pass in over a year. The need for redzone target simply cannot become anymore apparent. Arizona State’s Jaelen Strong could become a target for the Chiefs in round one. I have often compared Strong to Andre Johnson being a tough physical receiver who plays bigger than his size.
Then again the Chiefs could decide that Alex Smith is ultimately the problem. The one player who could fit the Chiefs very nicely is Oregon’s Marcus Mariota. It is no secret that Mariota only really fits two teams, one being the Kansas City Chiefs (Philadelphia is the other). With Andy Reid’s aerial passing attack combined with his creative screen plays Mariota may be able to thrive in Reid’s offense, something I cannot say about the other 30 franchises. Unfortunately this may be a pipe dream considering the Chiefs drafting position (18).
The other position on need rests in the secondary. Safety Eric Berry has retired and corner Sean Smith is stuck with DUI charges. Landon Collins from Alabama is a player who could peak the Chiefs interest, but Kansas City will likely select a corner because of Collins lack of covering skills. Jalen Collins from LSU seems to be in the range for Kansas City at pick number 18.
Below is the list of players met with as well as every 2015 draft selection.
