This is a wild couple of weeks for the world of basketball. The NBA Finals is a ginormous event for the game and after huge match-ups in the past, this may be the biggest NBA Finals yet. From it being the first time games 1 & 2 both went into overtime, to LeBron James scoring the most points through 3 games of NBA Finals history, there’s more reasons why this year’s NBA Finals might be the greatest of all time.
According to Ticketmaster, Game 1 of the NBA finals had an average resale ticket price of $1,023. Meanwhile, according to StubHub the average resale ticket price was $1,535. That’s nearly $1,000 more than what fans in attendance paid for the last 4 NBA finals. This was also the most expensive resale ticket price for any Game 1 in NBA Finals History.
According to ESPN Media Zone, this is the highest-rated NBA Finals ever on ABC through the first 3 games. Game 3 set plenty of records on WatchESPN. 736,200 unique viewers were recorded and an average minute audience of 207,300 was recorded. They are both up 113 percent and 118 percent from last year’s game.
Game 4 will begin on Thursday, June 11, at 9 PM on ABC. Jeff Van Gundy, Mark Jackson and Doris Burke will be commentating along side Mike Breen in his record setting 10th season as a voice for the NBA Finals.
This may be a series of busting records no matter what the outcome of the series turns out to be. With the Cleveland Cavaliers up 2-1 with home court advantage for one more night before returning to Golden State, there is still time for more records to be broken. There’s also the Cavs underdog narrative with the Matthew Dellavedova surprise story and Kyrie Irving going down due to an injury. If Warriors’ shooting guard Klay Thompson is right about his team winning this series, it may provide even more time for both teams as well as the fans and audience to set more records for this electric NBA Finals.
