What does time-travel, drag queens and ghosts all have in common? No it isn’t Rocky Horror does Back to the Future. They are the elements that make up James Wan’s ‘Insidious: Chapter 2’.
The film picks up where the first left off and the plot quickly becomes muddled from there as the story chronicles more misfortune of the Lambert family and their journey into the Further.
Despite strong performances from the actors, ‘Insidious 2’ falls flat on suspense and horror. The flick does have a few scares but Wan mostly relies on the same tricks he used in the original film including muffled baby monitor noises, music that plays by itself and perhaps the most annoying baby walker ever invented.
The film also has a slower pace and lighter tone than the original. With cheesy scenes and witty dialogue, it easily becomes more silly than sinister.
‘Insidious 2’ ends with a cliffhanger that will surely make fans want more. But with Wan retiring from horror films, it would be best to leave Chapter 3 locked away in the Further.
