In spite of a number of hiccups along the way, New York crime drama Power will be returning for a sixth season – even though season five hasn’t even aired yet.
Overcoming concerns that Power would be canceled along with its US network Starz, Starz has confirmed that the series will be back for “another great season” (via TVLine).
As well as confirming that the show had been picked up for a sixth run, Starz also announced when season five will premiere: Sunday, July 1.
Executive producer Curtis Jackson (aka the 50 Cent) is set to make his directorial debut for the brand new season too, taking over the helm for season six’s premiere.
“As Power wraps production on season 5, we want to acknowledge and thank our spectacular Power team for producing another great season,” Starz programming president Carmi Zlotnik said in a statement. “We are also pleased to announce a pickup for season 6.”
The award-winning show follows James ‘Ghost’ St Patrick (Omari Hardwick), a nightclub owner leading a double life as a major player in the drugs business.
Power, which has also garnered a huge cult following thanks to Netflix, has been praised for its diversity and ‘visionary’ take on lives that straddle the glamorous Manhattan lifestyle and the underworld of the international drugs trade.
