Paul Pierce announced last month that this upcoming season would be his last in the NBA. He also announced that before he retires, he will sign a contract with the Boston Celtics to retire as a member of the organization that drafted him and won an NBA championship with.
Unfortunately for Pierce, he won’t be able to participate in the first game of his final campaign.
Dan Woike of the Orange County Register reports that Pierce suffered his ankle after stepping on a reporter’s foot and as a result, Pierce will miss the Clippers season opener on October 27th against the Portland Trail Blazers.

It’s absolutely a freak accident and it’s unfortunate ‘The Truth’ won’t be suiting up for the Clippers. Fortunately, LA has other players who will more than likely take up the minutes he would’ve occupied in the first game. Hopefully, it’s not a lingering issue for Pierce and he can return to the court soon.
