Ole’ Miss thrashed Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide last week, then followed that performance by embarrassing Texas A&M. Texas A&M the week before got smashed on by Mississippi State. Mississippi State then continued only to obliterate the #2 team in the country – Auburn. Sufficed to say Mississippi is dominating college football.
Dak Prescott, Mississippi State’s QB, is the undisputed Heisman front runner. He’s thrown an average of 250 yards per game and has rushed for an impressive 96 yards per game. His QBR so far this season is 84.9. Whats most impressive about Dak however, is well…his teams record in the nation’s toughest sub-conference, The SEC West.
Likewise, Ole Miss has been dominant, but in a different way – defense. They allow the fewest points in the SEC (11.8), and they are led by the biggest hitter in the country, All-American Cody Prewitt. While currently playing as a defensive back, he has the strength and explosion to be converted into a pro-linebacker. He’s been making receivers puke and lose their shoes like clockwork.
While the two teams have been impressive thus far, is it really a result of their performance? Is it possible that the traditional SEC powers have taken a step back? Nick Saban certainly lost some of his recruiting prowess when Texas A&M joined the SEC and hired their first black coach in school history. Their rivals Auburn have been affluent in recent years. In fact, they were favorited to win the National Championship this year. Gus Malzahn, last year’s coach of the year, got beat at his own game – the Bulldogs were just faster.
High intensity, high speed offense is what wins football games now. Saban’s traditional ground and pound style team can’t hack it anymore. Maybe it’s time to lay off the weights and focus on conditioning. Afterall Saban, who’s the last NFL superstar you’ve produced? Dont worry….I’ll wait. Mississippi is dominating college football now. So long Roll Tide, and Howdy Hail State and Hotty Toddy!
