Following its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival back in January, where it received rave reviews from critics and audience members alike, Annapurna Pictures has released the wildly over-the-top first trailer for Boots Riley’s upcoming sci-fi fantasy comedy Sorry to Bother You starring Lakeith Stanfield (Atlanta) and, uh, it definitely looks interesting (to say the least).
According to the film’s official synopsis, Lakeith Stanfield stars here as Cassius Green, a telemarketer living in an alternate present-day version of Oakland who discovers a magical key to professional success, propelling him into a macabre universe. What is that key, you ask? Using his “white voice” while trying to sell things to people over the phone.
As you could probably tell from the trailer, that’s not actually Stanfield doing the talking when his character goes into white guy mode—the recognizable dubbed voice you hear is actually that of Arrested Development star David Cross.
Despite looking bonkers as hell, I’m certainly curious to see how Riley’s ambitious satirical comedy plays out, especially since it features quite an impressive cast that also includes Tessa Thompson, Armie Hammer, Terry Crews, Steven Yeun, Omari Hardwick, Jermaine Fowler, and Danny Glover. Sorry to Bother You opens in theaters on July 6.
