Similar to Skype and Google Voice, Facebook has introduced i’s very own VOIP calling system through their iPhone messages app. Now iPhone users can simply open up a conversation with a friend, click the new phone icon, and have a good ol’ fashioned voice conversation. This service is completely free because like Skype and Google Voice it uses Wi-Fi. It can incur some charges for data usage if used over a 3G or 4G connection, however.
Though this isn’t the first free VOIP service, it does bring the technology to everyone that uses Facebook, making it a lot more well known to a massive audience. Now everyone who has a Facebook and has the Facebook messages app can use this new service. This also gives users the ability to call anyone on their Facebook friends list–whether you have their phone number or not. This is something other free VOIP calling systems have yet to offer.
