Iggy Azalea has found herself in another controversy, this time surrounding Beyonce’s “Becky with the good hair” lyric, accusing the R&B superstar of making a racial slur.
By now, you may have watched or even heard about Beyonce’s “Lemonade” special that aired on HBO this past weekend for her sixth studio album, LEMONADE.
Well, the Australian rapper took to Twitter to accuse Beyonce of using hip-hop slang that white women might find offensive, noting the name Becky is a “racist” term used to describe a generic Caucasian girl with long, straight hair – or a typical ‘Valley Girl’.
Despite using the term herself in her 2012 tune, “I Think She Ready”, Azalea was quick to tell a fan on Twitter: “Don’t ever call me a Becky.”
The rapper went on to compare the use of Becky to other names which are meant to stereotype and offend, like “Ming Lee” for Asians & “Sha Nay Nay” for African American women.
“Generalizing ANY race by calling them one sterotypical name for said race. i personally dont think is very cool, the end.” Azalea tweeted. “I don’t care. Don’t call all Asian women ‘Ming Lee.’ Don’t call white women ‘Becky.’ Don’t call black women ‘Sha Nay Nay (sic),” Azalea tweeted.
Azalea concluded her series of tweets by insisting that none of her tweets were directed at Beyonce, and that she loves the new album, which was released on Saturday.
