The world of hip-hop rejoices as Global hip Hop Day has been announced.
While hip hop has become a worldwide art form, it’s humble beginnings start in the Bronx. In the early 1970’s, 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx became the birthplace of hip hop. Many thought hip hop was a fade and would end soon after. The genre has become an powerful form of self-expression, spanning for decades worldwide.
As reported by XXL, Global Hip Hop Day will be celebrated on June 8. The New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, as well as Hot 97 and the Office of the Bronx are all working to host the event. Many of hip-hop’s forefathers will be in attendance such as, DJ Kool Herc, DJ Red Alert, Grandmaster Caz, Kid Capri, Doug E. Fresh, Slick Rick, and many more.
In the Bronx, there will also be a street renaming ceremony. The ceremony will happen at Cedar Playground, where a block party will happen as well. The avenue block around the park is to be renamed Hip Hop Boulevard.
While more surprises are in store to come, this is an event all hip hop fans should attend.
