Four mutant turtles over threw a mutant tree and raccoon to take the top spot of the box office.
‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ pulled in $65 million during its opening weekend and earned the title of fourth biggest August opening ever. It blew studio predictions out of the water which put the film around the $40-$50 million mark. While critics panned the film which currently holds at 19% on RottenTomatoes, audiences raved giving the movie giving it a B on CinemaScore which polls audiences at movies opening night.
‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ held strong in its second week with another $41.5 million. This is a 56% drop from its historic $94 million debut last week. It now boasts its domestic total to $176 million and is already one of the top 10 highest grossing films this year.
The tornado thriller ‘Into the Storm’ grossed a respectable $18 million and slides into third place. It took $50 million to produce and still has a chance to turn a profit with good word of mouth.
‘The Hundred-Foot Journey’ came in fourth place with a opening weekend haul of $11 million. The Helen Mirren lead film may still have legs as it is geared toward an older audience and they don’t always go to a movie its debut weekend.
Rounding out the top five is the Scarlett Johansson sci-fi action flick ‘Lucy’ which earned $9.3 million in its third week and brings its domestic total to $97 million. Expect it to cross the $100 million mark next week.
This week ‘Let’s Be Cops’, ‘The Expendables 3’ and ‘The Giver’ hope to take down ‘Turtles’ when they hit theaters this week.
