‘Lee Daniel’s: The Butler’ sets a record as it becomes the first film of 2013 to hold three consecutive weeks at the top spot of the box office. The historical drama brought in $20 million over the Labor Day weekend. The film is now set up to rake in over $100 million domestically.
Directioners weren’t enough to knock ‘The Butler’ from the top spot as ‘One Direction: This Is Us’ earns the runner up spot by bringing in $18 million. The film had a strong start and actually beat ‘The Butler’ for the first three days of the weekend but quickly ran out of steam.
‘We’re the Millers’ is still hanging around the upper tier of the box office and earned third place by bringing in an estimated $15.9 million and pushes past the $100 million mark.
Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez’s thriller ‘Getaway’ crashed hard earning only $5.5 million over the extended weekend. The movie has become the worst reviewed movie of the year so far earning a 2% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Don’t expect ‘The Butler’ to keep the top spot next week as ‘Riddick’ is unleashed into theaters on Friday.
