The Weinstein film about a longtime White House butler has taken the top spot at the box office earning $25 million. ‘Lee Daniels’: The Butler’ surpassed industry predictions and gave the Weinstein its first number one film since 2009’s ‘Inglorious Basterds’.
‘We’re the Millers’ seems to be a stronger competitor as it takes the runner up place and holds off 3 new debuts. The R-Rated comedy took in an estimated $17.8 million.
Last week’s top film ‘Elysium’ drops to third place taking in a reported $13.6 million.
‘Kick-Ass 2’ only took in $13.6 million despite having a huge promotion push in the last two weeks. The film fell short compared to its predecessor which took in $19.9 million. Universal Studios said they were disappointed with the sequel’s opening.
The Steve Jobs biopic, ‘Jobs’, landed outside the top five at number seven by taking in an estimated $6.7 million. The film has received some criticism from Steve Wozniak who said he was turned off by the films script. He told The Verge there were a lot of things wrong with the script and he didn’t like people not getting the credit they deserve.
Next week the fantasy film ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones’ dukes it out with the comedy ‘The World’s End’ and the horror film ‘You’re Next’.
