‘Gravity’ rockets to the top of the box office chart by pulling in $55.5 million over the weekend. The film has had the biggest October opening ever and is the biggest opening for Sandra Bullock and George Clooney ever. ‘Gravity’ did most of its business in IMAX and 3D films which accounted for 80% of its total revenue.
Since its debut at the Venice Film Festival, the movie has gained universal acclaim by critics and is a top contender for the upcoming award season.
Last week’s winner ‘Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2’ fell to the runner up position by taking in $21.5 million bringing its 10-day total to $60.6 million.
The only other new film this week was ‘Runner Runner’ starring Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake. The drama came in third with a dismal opening of only $7.6 million. There is still hope for the film as it had a relatively small budget of $30 million.
‘Prisoners’ and ‘Rush’ round out the top five by pulling in $5.7 million and $4.4 million respectively.
‘Gravity’ will have some competition for the pole position as ‘Machete Kills’, ‘Captain Phillips’ and ‘Romeo and Juliet’ are all released on Friday.
