The weekend box office numbers are in and Sony’s ‘The Dark Tower’ has taken the #1 spot while at the same time underperforming. ‘The Dark Tower’ was projected to bring in an estimated $20-25 million in its opening weekend and only managed to bring in an estimated $19.5 million. The underperformance calls into question the future prospects of the franchise with a planned TV show and sequel already on the books. ‘Dunkirk’ continued its stellar performance at the box office by bringing in an additional $17.6 million. The film has now grossed over $300 million worldwide. Coming in third was Sony’s ‘The Emoji Movie’ which brought in another $12 million. The film has been moderately successful at the box office even though it has been savaged by critics and currently holds a 8% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. ‘Girls Trip’ ended up snagging the 4th spot by bringing in an additional $11 million. ‘Girls Trip’ is quickly zeroing in on the $100 million mark at the domestic box office which is great for Universal as the film only cost $19 million to produce. The Halle Berry thriller ‘Kidnap’ rounds out the top 5 by bringing an estimated $10.2 million in its opening frame. Check below for a full breakdown of the weekends’ numbers.
