The summer box office officially ended this past weekend, though the case could be made that it ended three weeks ago. The Labor Day weekend is usually hit or miss when it comes to the box office. It rarely produces the hits that can be found on the July 4th and MLK weekends respectively, though the weekend is also rarely this bad. ‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard’ managed to pull off the three-peat on the three-day weekend by bringing in an estimated $13.3 million. The Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds vehicle has now grossed over $58 million domestically. ‘Annabelle: Creation’ held on to the second spot by bringing in another $9.3 million. The additional money pushed ‘Annabelle: Creation’ over the top of ‘Get Out’ to make it the most profitable horror film of the year and kept it on track to become the most profitable film of 2017 so far. ‘Wind River’ successfully rode a wave of good buzz and a steady rollout to a third place finish. ‘Wind River’ has steadily climbed up the charts since it’s initial limited release in early August. The film started it’s run with only 4 screens across the states and has now expanded to over 2600 screens. The film has already doubled it’s budget and looks to become even more profitable in the coming weeks.
Normally I’d breakdown the entire top 5 but instead this week I’m going to take a look at the week ahead. ‘IT’ releases in theatres this friday and is expected to become an instant smash. Some are even projecting that it could smash several records over the upcoming weekend. ‘IT’ is projected to bring in somewhere between $50-$70 million over the weekend. If the film can bring these kinds of numbers in its opening weekend it firmly sets up the opportunity for the film to go on a run and become the most profitable film of 2017. ‘IT’ cost an estimated $35 million to produce which puts it firmly in the realm of moderate budget horror films that have the potential for massive profits.
