M.A.Y.O.R. is an acronym for Move At Your Own Risk. At first glance, this statement can be taken as a caution sign for danger lying ahead. In actuality this statement exemplifies courage,
composure and creativity to move towards your goals despite the inevitable challenges one may face. Hailing from the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens in the city of New York, the members of
MAYOR come from Afro-American, Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Latino backgrounds. The mix of Rock, Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Gospel, Pop, Reggae, Hip-Hop & R&B that engulfed New York City in the 90’s and 2000’s shaped their love for diversity and a variety of music. Their musical focus gave them something in common and helped keep them away from the perils of the streets that grab so many inner city youth’s attention.
The decision for Dru M and lead singer Bike Tyson in 2013 to start MAYOR was the move that required ultimate risk and sacrifice. Although anxious, their chemistry together was effortless and most importantly fun! They wrote, produced and directed their debut song and video, “Gold Dreamin”. It was well received by the public with over 3,000 views and 10,000 streams and downloads in 2014 alone! This inspirational song established a message of courage, dedication to your craft and reaching for your dreams whatever they may be. In Autumn 2014, Dru and bassist Hashim were back home from a three-week tour of Europe with Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. They called Bike to sing at their impromptu jam session, which led to a song collaboration and Hash joining M.A.Y.O.R.! For the next year, they recorded and performed together with Khuent Rose, a pianist, vocalist, steel pan
virtuoso and friend of Dru’s since High School. Guitarist Cory “Gypsy” Simpson completed the final piece of the creative puzzle after a chance invitation by Dru to record at their Level
Expert/Twinjo Recording Studio in Brooklyn.
The members of MAYOR have hosted workshops and mentored students in New York City, Mexico, Brazil, Honduras, El Salvador, Colombia, Saudi Arabia and Dominican Republic. Their mentees have drawn inspiration from their “One Accord, One Sound” workshops. Some of their students have gone on to
study in the United States in Michigan and Boston. The members of MAYOR have performed and recorded with musicians all over the world including Tony Allen (Fela Kuti Drummer & Afrobeat
Pioneer), Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, MF DOOM, Childish Gambino, Richie Spice, Corey Glover (Living Colour), T.O.K., Public Enemy, Yaasin Bey (Mos Def) and De La Soul.
Now they are ready to make a mark of their own with their debut album Animal Instincts, which will be released under their independent label, Level Expert Media. This album is a collection
of soulful, catchy songs with elements of Rock, Pop and Funk in the mix. The sound is reminiscent of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phil Collins, Lenny Kravitz, N.E.R.D. and Jodeci. With 9 songs, the
5-piece band takes you on a sonic journey that is dynamic, moving and true to their identity.
