Towards the end of January, Universal announced that Tom Cruise would be starring in the upcoming reboot of The Mummy. The Hollywood Reporter has now confirmed that Cruise has gotten himself a costar: Annabelle Wallis. Wallis is best known for her role in the British gangster drama Peaky Blinders.
Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek: Into Darkness) will be directing The Mummy as his directorial debut. The film is meant to be the first feature in a series of interconnected monster movies, which Kurtzman will oversee alongside Fast and Furious‘s Chris Morgan. EW reports that this cinematic monster universe will contain Dracula, The Invisible Man, and Frankenstein (despite the failings of Victor Frankenstein in 2015).
The Mummy will be set in modern day, with Cruise playing a special forces soldier, and Wallis as a scientist. Kingsman: The Secret Service star Sofia Boutella will join the movie as the infamous titular mummy.
The film’s screenplay was written by Jon Spaihts. Audiences can look forward to the movie’s release on June 9, 2017.
